Hello Sunshine….

June, the beginning of summer with longer, warmer, sunnier days ahead! No wonder National Sunglasses Day is on the 27th, highlighting the importance of protecting our eyes from UV rays – after all, we need to take care of our pupils! Other health related observances this month include, Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness, Men’s Mental Health, and National PTSD Awareness. PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced a trauma, from young children to elderly seniors, and can best be addressed by trained professionals. As we enjoy our journey through life, I believe monthly awareness campaigns are a good reminder to become more informed for our personal and others’ well-being. This knowledge helps in taking preventative steps for one’s own health while understanding those already afflicted. Our culture just might be in need of a little more empathy!

In case you missed it, we had a very informative and detailed presentation given by Keith Birkley and Eric Adman representing the Adopt A Stream Foundation and its Northwest Stream Center. It’s a nonprofit located in the Everett/Martha Lake area operating out of McCollum Park. The organization focuses on projects like removing fish passage barriers, restoring habitats, and educating the public through hands-on exhibits. The Northwest Stream Center has a visitor center, event space, and half mile nature trail which is wheelchair accessible. Please visit their website for specific directions and additional information at: www.streamkeeper.org.

At our last board meeting. We passed a revised organizational chart which will be presented to MSA members at our June luncheon/meeting. The rationale for this change is to bring more clarity in distinguishing current board positions from chair positions and better delineating roles and responsibilities. In addition, it will aid us in seeking volunteer help from members and others without attaching long term commitments to an area of assistance. MSA bylaws will be updated to reflect these changes. We will gladly address any questions, suggestions – or your interest in participating immediately following our luncheon. Speaking of our June luncheon, Shannon Wallace, from the highly acclaimed and very welcoming Mukilteo Library (part of Sno-Isle Libraries) will be our featured speaker. She is returning due to popular demand!

Please review the activities noted throughout the newsletter and enjoy those of interest to you. Rosehill Community Center has many other offerings for seniors as well as all age groups. Rosehill continues to be a vital resource center serving the greater Mukilteo community!

Everyday might not be sunny but you can spread the sunshine within you…
